This is a heart-warming story about Ellen who is brought up in poverty after the death of her parents. As a young married woman during world War II she helps with the evacuees from the bombing of Southampton. Among them is 4 year-old Pamela with whom she forms an instant connection.

Unable to have children Pamela fills that void for Ellen and her husband until four years later when Pamela’s father appears to claim her. This is a beautiful story of how Ellen copes with her heartbreak. The strong characters live in the reader’s imagination. I really enjoyed it.
